Since February I have been anticipating the 2016 growing season, I was stalking the the gardening isles of every hardware store as Christmas decor was still making its exit from the seasonal departments. Finally it is passed May long weekend and planting seeds and seedlings outdoors has become a total free for all. I have already killed a small crop of tomato plants I had grown 3 ft. tall from seed and have learned the hard way that tomato plants MUST BE PROTECTED. An overnight frost followed by a snow storm killed all but two scraggly survivors.
This gardening routine requires daily maintenance - watering, monitoring for disease/pests, turning the compost and pulling weeds. As I grew a bunch of plants from seed it was magical to watch but the need for "potting up" seemed to get put off until it was sometimes too late and I had stunted my little plants. I've learned a lot as I've started to attempt growing food and for the most part, I am enjoying every minute of it. Gardening can be so incredibly time consuming but it turns out that for me, playing in the dirt is a labour of love.

My herb garden thus far, has rosemary, lavender, majoram, thyme, oregano, basil, lemon bamb and peppermint. There are a fair few more that I would like to add to the collection but for now I'm focussed on helping my current stash thrive and incorperating the flavours into my cooking (and teas) as much a possible.
My container vegetable garden currently includes zucchini (pictured below), tomatoes, beets, radishes, spinach, rainbow swiss chard and green leaf lettuce. My tiny fruit garden is inhabited by a flowering strawberry plant and a row of saskatoon berry bushes in the backyard.
